Sei Shihan Neil Mathieson  (6th Dan)

Sei Shihan Neil (a.k.a Poppa Neil) started karate in 1973. His first instructor was Senpai Brent Trevean. He won two middle weight National Kumite titles, in 1974 and ‘75, both under Kyokoshinkai.

 

Sei Shihan graded to Shodan in 1974, Nidan in 1982, Sandan in 1985, Yondan in 1989, Godan in 1997, Rokudan in 2005, and to Senior 6th Dan in 2011.

 

Sei Shihan has instructed for some time, taking brown belt class as a Shodan

 

Sei Shihan Neil travelled to New York in 1975, with Hanshi Renzie and a team of ten karateka, to strengthen ties with Kaicho Tadashi Nakamura. Sei Shihan travelled with Hanshi Renzie to support him when he graded to 8th Dan in 2008.

 

Sei Shihan was inducted into the New Zealand Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2013 alongside Sei Shihan Peter, Harry Roeloffs, and Gavin Lowe.

 

Sei Shihan has been a teacher all his working life, teaching pre school through to high school.
