Senpai Steve Dodge (1st Dan)

I was 14 years old when I had my first experience with karate in 1979. My first karate club, Wado Ryu, was at my local community centre. In 1981, I began training in Pak Mei Kung Fu under the guidance of Sifu: Paul Town.

When I was 17 years old, I joined the British Army and my own personal martial arts history took a back seat. However, in 1985, I met up with a young soldier from Hong Kong who introduced to me to chinese kickboxing and over several months I found my interest in the martial arts re-kindled. When I left the forces shortly after this, I spent several years training in the art of Bujinkan Ninjutsu under ‘Soke’ Peter Brown. I trained in this style until the late 1980’s reaching green belt.

In 2007, Senpai George, Senpai Eleanor, myself, and my partner Julie left the United Kingdom and moved to New Zealand. In April 2009, I walked through the Seido Doors and since that day, I have never looked back. In 2012, I attended the Wellington tournament and I came home with three silver medals in kata, points sparring and semi-contact sparring.

Since joining Seido, I have assisted with children’s classes and the kid’s camps. I also assist Shibu by attending board meetings. In December of 2015, I graded to Shodan and have regularly assisted various children’s classes since then.

I will be taking Monday’s children’s class 4:30 – 5:30 for Senpai Cheryl while she is away.
